Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School serves the parishes of Sacred Heart, Ilkley, Our Lady and English Martyrs, Addingham, and St John Fisher and St Thomas More, Burley in Wharfedale, within the Diocese of Leeds.
It has a proud history of providing a consistently high standard of education across all areas of the curriculum. The highly qualified and dedicated staff work tirelessly to maintain the school’s commitment to excellence and to enable the children to become confident and articulate young people who enjoy life and make the most of its opportunities.
The school’s Mission Statement challenges everyone in the school community, as a chosen child of Christ, to spread the Gospel message through everything that they say and do. This ethos is lived out on a daily basis through the interactions between staff, children and visitors; the high standards of academic work that is produced across the school; the well-established links that exist with the local community, the Diocese, the other Bishop Wheeler Trust schools and organisations such as Catholic Care and CAFOD.
Parents/Carers are strongly encouraged to be involved with the school in a variety of ways e.g. attendance at whole school Masses, Liturgies and Assemblies, attendance at Information Evenings, as members of the Academy Council, as volunteers helping within school, as fund raisers in the ‘Sacred Heart School Association’, as members of the ‘Carnival Committee’ and as visitors during Open Mornings/Evenings.
The school’s ‘Open Door’ policy ensures that everyone associated with the school is able to discuss school-related matters with staff, at mutually agreed times, when issues arise.
Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School was recognised by the then DfEE in April 1998 as a ‘particularly successful school’.
It was awarded Beacon Status in September 1999 and received funding to share its good practice with other schools, with it being renewed in 2002.
Despite the Beacon Schools Initiative being withdrawn by the DfES, many of the projects run with local schools continue to develop skills and raise achievement across the Wharfe Valley in areas such as Special Education Needs, Early Years provision and Assessment development.
In April 2013, we became a member of the newly formed 'Bishop Wheeler Catholic Academy Trust' along with partner schools in Otley, Menston, Pudsey, Yeadon and Horsforth.
We have worked in partnership with Leeds Trinity University (previously known as Trinity and all Saints' College, Horsforth) for over a decade with their Initial Teaching Training programmes. Complementing this we currently train 'School Direct' students in partnership with our Trust's Teaching School Alliance, led by St Mary's Horsforth.
We continue to strive to maintain the high standards of educational excellence which were recognised in our most recent OFSTED inspection (January 2007). The report described us as.."an outstanding school which is highly successful and knows itself well." An internal Trust school-to-school review (February 2015) verified the school's evaluation that it is providing and maintaining an 'outstanding' education for its pupils.
The Section 48 Diocesan inspection (March 2013) found Sacred Heart to be 'Good with Outstanding elements.' The interim Canonical Review in July 2015 confirmed that the school is "on track and making sufficient progress" towards being judged Outstanding in all areas of the current S48 inspection framework.
Sacred Heart School was designated by the National College for Teaching and Learning to be a 'National Support School' in August 2015. We work in partnership with St. Mary's Teaching School, Horsforth, within our Trust.
